The Secret of Micro-Miniature Precision and Idea

My works are born much like works in other fields of art: each micro-miniature begins as an idea within the artist's broader field of interest. Although I use a microscope while working, it is important to stress that the microscope itself does not solve any creative or technological problem.

Just as a telescope does not guarantee that the mountain peak it reveals will be climbed, the microscope cannot replace the work. Making a micro-miniature is a living, constantly changing creative process: idea, material knowledge, newly created tools, inner rhythm and long, patient work are all needed at once.

The wisdom of materials and tools

01

The wisdom of materials and tools

When solving technological problems, deep knowledge of the materials used is essential. Only by understanding their chemical, physical and mechanical properties can one create something, almost as if playing with the materials and using both their advantages and disadvantages. This is as important as the strict order of moves in a chess game: I have no permanent tool, each instrument must be created anew for the task.

The power of concentration and will

The power of concentration and will

The movement of microscopic cutting tools is disturbed by the artist's own breathing and heartbeat. During especially delicate and precise operations I follow a defined inner rhythm: I try to perform the next movement with the tool between two beats of my heart. This process borders on absorbed meditation and self-suggestion.

The strawberry grip

03

The strawberry grip

I carry out every operation by hand, holding the tools between thumb and index finger as one holds a strawberry by its stem: without any tension. I learned maximalism at school. I believe that determination pushed to the very edge expands associative thinking, so the technical solution to the hardest task may appear at any moment, even during sleep.

97% of the work

If the process of creating any object is taken as 100%, only 3% belongs to finding the technology; the remaining 97% is pure work. There is no way to make this work easier or shorter. A micro-miniature is not a quick trick but months of discipline: repetition, patience, flawless body control and the complete presence of thought.

"The precision of any movement does not depend on the precision of the hands, but on the belief that the movement will be unquestionably precise."
