How I Do It

Mykola Syadristy1959

Mykola Syadristy, in his own words, on how his microminiatures come to life.

“Visitors to my microminiature exhibitions often ask me questions. The most common: what made me create microminiatures, how can such incredible precision be achieved, and what matters most in my work?”

How an idea is born

How are my works born? Perhaps the same way as in other fields: the idea for each microminiature takes shape within the creator's general interests. I use a microscope in my work, but I can honestly say that it does not, by itself, solve any creative or technical problem. A telescope is no guarantee that the mountain peak it shows will be conquered.

Material and technology

To solve technical problems, you must know the properties of the materials you use very well in practice. Only by thoroughly knowing their chemical, physical and mechanical properties can you create anything – almost playing with the materials and making use of both their advantages and their drawbacks.

Concentration and inspiration

Creating a microminiature demands maximum physical and mental concentration. I believe that determination pushed to the very limit expands one's thinking, and the solution to the hardest task can arrive at any moment. I have found most of my technical solutions not only in my workshop but also on the trolleybus, on the metro, or while tying my tie.

Technique and soul

I do every operation by hand. The movement of the microscopic cutting tools is disturbed by my breathing and my heartbeat. That is why, in especially fine and precise operations, I keep to a particular inner rhythm.
