The story
The Coca-Cola contour bottle was designed in 1915 by the Root Glass Company of Indiana and went into production in 1916. The shape was inspired by a drawing of a cocoa bean in a book.
How it was made
He shaped the bottle from a single piece of gold on a miniature lathe he built himself, then polished it to a mirror finish. The hardest part was the lettering: an even smaller, legible logo had to be applied to the bottle's curved surface.
Did you know?
The designers' brief read: we need a bottle so distinctive that you would recognise it by touch in the dark, or even lying broken on the ground. Under the microscope the same shape is instantly recognisable – just 1.65 millimetres tall.
